Former SFO Director appointed to EU fraud role

Rosalind Wright, former Director of the Serious Fraud Office has been appointed by the European Commission to the OLAF Supervisory Committee. She joins four other new appointees on a three-year term, effective from today.

Commenting on the appointment, current SFO Director Robert Wardle said, "I am delighted to see that Mrs Wright's considerable senior experience in the criminal justice system and the financial regulatory sector in the UK will be applied for the benefit of the wider community of Europe. Mrs Wright has become synonymous with the fight against fraud and her leadership, her extensive knowledge and undoubted skills in this field has brought deserved recognition. The interests of OLAF and the wider EC will be well served by this appointment. I also take the opportunity to offer my cordial congratulations to the other new members of the committee".

Notes:

  • Mrs Wright was Director of the Serious Fraud Office April 1997 to April 2003. She is also Chairperson of the Fraud Advisory Panel and a non-executive director of the Office of Fair Trading and the Department of Trade & Industry.
  • The OLAF Supervisory Committee of five is composed of senior figures from judicial/criminal justice authorities from EU member states. Its role is to oversee the investigative function of OLAF, the European budget anti-fraud office based in Brussels to ensure that OLAF operates impartially in its dealings with other EC institutions and with national jurisdiction authorities of the member states.
